Lying-Down Concert – The Goldberg Variations

This concert is a part of the series «Cathedral of Light – International Summer Concerts»

Kai Krakenberg (Husum, Germany)

There is a famous story about a count who struggled with sleepless nights. To comfort him, Johann Sebastian Bach composed a set of 32 variations based on a simple aria for the count’s chamber musician, the harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg. These works later became known as The Goldberg Variations — one of the most beautiful, important, and technically demanding masterpieces in music history.

Originally written for harpsichord, The Goldberg Variations have since appeared in many different arrangements. For two special concerts in the Arctic Cathedral, Kai Krakenberg will perform this extraordinary late-Baroque work on the Grønlund organ.

To make the experience even more unique, we invite the audience to bring a blanket and find a comfortable place to lie down while listening to the music. Perhaps on one of the benches, perhaps on the floor, or wherever you feel most at ease. Experience Bach’s timeless music from a new perspective — relaxed, immersed, and surrounded by sound.

Doors open at 20:30 (08:30 PM).

Tickets NOK 350 at the entrance. Online booking will be avaliable later.
