Concert of baroque music

Sound Room: Lent

The chorale Jesu, meine Freude is at the center of this concert, performed by Kantori Tromsø, soloists and instrumentalists under the direction of the Arctic Cathedral's cantor, Thorsten Ahlrichs.

The concert opens with a setting of Psalm 121, Ad te levavi , by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. This introduction sets the mood for an evening of reflection and contemplation during Lent.

Dietrich Buxtehude, organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck, was an important source of inspiration for the young Johann Sebastian Bach. In his cantata on Jesu, meine Freude we already hear musical ideas that later find their perfect form in Bach's motet on the same chorale.

The program also offers a sonata for two violins and basso continuo, as well as excerpts from Bach's partita over Sei gegrüsset, Jesu gütig for organ.

Bach's motet Jesu, meine Freude is a masterpiece of textual interpretation. Here he uses the chorale's five verses, weaves them together with biblical texts, and creates a strictly symmetrical and deeply thought-out musical sermon.
