Organ concert

Step into the majestic Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø for an unforgettable evening of organ music on October 2nd, 2025. Performed by cathedrals organist Thorsten Ahlrichs, this concert brings together timeless classics and modern gems in a rich and atmospheric program.

Program:

· J.S. Bach – Toccata in C major BWV 566a A brilliant and energetic early work by Bach, full of youthful flair, vivid counterpoint, and dazzling keyboard runs—perfect for showcasing the grandeur of the organ.

· Ola Gjeilo – Northern Lights (arr. Thorsten Ahlrichs) Originally written for choir, this stunning piece captures the serene mystery and shimmering beauty of the aurora borealis—specially arranged for organ by Ahlrichs to echo the arctic wonder outside the cathedral walls.

· “Lær meg å kjenne” – Traditional Norwegian hymn (arr. Mons Leidvin Takle) A heartfelt and lyrical arrangement of a beloved hymn. Takle’s version brings warmth and intimacy to the organ, blending tradition with a touch of cinematic flair.

· Philip Glass – Satyagraha, Conclusion Act III (arr. Michael Riesman) A mesmerizing minimalist work from Glass’s opera inspired by Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence. The finale’s repeating patterns and gradual evolution create a meditative, almost spiritual atmosphere—transformed here for the organ in a powerful arrangement.
