Sybille Groß – organ
Sybille Groß received her first organ lessons on the historic Huß/Schnitger organ at St. Cosmae Church in Stade. She studied Protestant church music at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, graduating in 1994 with the highest church music qualification (A-examination). She subsequently pursued further studies at the Scuola di Musica Antica in Venice with Andrea Marcon (organ) and Edward Smith (harpsichord). Important artistic impulses came through masterclasses with renowned musicians including Harald Vogel, Michael Radulescu, Lorenzo Ghielmi, William Porter, and Andrea Marcon.
From 1995 to 2013, Sybille Groß served as district cantor in Holzminden. Since 2013, she has held the same position in Buxtehude, where she is organist of the historic Furtwängler organ (1859) at St. Petri Church — the largest early Romantic organ in northern Germany, situated in the internationally celebrated organ region between the Elbe and Weser rivers.
As a concert organist, Sybille Groß has performed throughout Europe. She has appeared with the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin as well as members of the WDR Radio Orchestra and the Bremen Chamber Symphony in organ concertos by JG Rheinberger, Francis Poulenc, and CPE Bach.
For her concert in the Arctic Cathedral, Sybille Groß presents a program inspired by the musical landscapes of Scandinavia, featuring works by Edvard Grieg, Emil Sjögren, and Oskar Lindberg, alongside German Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach and the French Romantic organ virtuoso Aloÿs Claussmann.
At the heart of the program stands Oskar Lindberg's dramatic Sonata in G minor — a work of dazzling virtuosity, rich Romantic colours, Nordic melancholy, and powerful emotional intensity.
